The Tohoku region is a place I definitely want you to visit when you come to Japan. Let me share the reasons why I recommend it.

1.Less crowded tourist spots

Tohoku is still relatively unknown to many international visitors, making it a place where you can experience the "genuine and unspoiled Japan" that hasn’t been overly commercialized. While it may be considered rural, it is rich in history, culture, and breathtaking scenery, offering countless attractions to explore.

2.Easy access from Tokyo

Just 3 hours from Tokyo: Fukushima Prefecture’s Aizu region is packed with attractions and can be reached in about 3 hours. Take the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Koriyama Station (1.5 hours) and then a high-speed bus for another 1 hour and 20 minutes. While Tohoku is often thought to have inconvenient transportation, getting there is no harder than traveling to popular tourist destinations like Takayama or Shirakawa-go.

Each prefecture in Tohoku has Shinkansen stations, airport as well as bus and train services. However, since the region is more rural, there may be fewer English signs compared to other popular tourist destinations. Having a guide can make your trip more comfortable and stress-free.

3.Travel while supporting local communities:

The Tohoku region faces significant challenges with population decline, making tourism an important source of local revenue. By visiting Tohoku, you can experience the daily lives of its residents while contributing to the local economy by purchasing souvenirs and dining at local establishments. In contrast, popular destinations like Kyoto are often overcrowded, leading to issues with over tourism. When you travel, why not choose a destination where your visit is genuinely welcomed by the local community?
